CoolSculpting 101

Most people interested in the aesthetic industry have heard about CoolSculpting. Even the name is cool. But many people don’t know what the procedure entails or how it works. Here’s a primer on CoolSculpting.

CoolSculpting is a relatively new procedure that destroys fat cells with targeted freezing. It doesn’t use lasers, sonic waves, or surgery to remove the fat cells. It does not damage surrounding tissue.

How does CoolSculpting work?

In a CoolSculpting session, the device is attached to the area to be targeted where it applies light suction to the skin and underlying tissue. The device is then activated and it delivers controlled cooling into the tissue below. The temperature is set so that it only freezes the fat cells, not the surrounding non-fat cells. Once the fat cells are frozen (this is also called crystallized) they begin to die. It can take a few days or a few weeks, but over time roughly 20% of the fat cells in the targeted area die. The body then discards then naturally. The remaining fat layer, now 20% less dense, condenses back into a single thinner layer.

How long does it take?

A CoolSculpting session with the Saltz team takes from one to three hours, depending on the areas to be treated. The procedure is pain-free and patients don’t even need to pay attention — they can read, browse the web on their laptops, listen to music, or even take a nap. There isn’t any recovery time, either, so patients can immediately return to their typical activities.

As the fat cells continue to die and the body flushes them away, your results keep improving. Most patients realize their final results after about four months.

CoolSculpting is indeed true to its name and is a unique procedure that works. Schedule your session with Dr. Saltz by calling our Salt Lake or Park City offices.
