Want to Take A Decade Off Your Age?
- Posted on: Nov 15 2016
Your eyes. Whether they are the windows into your soul, who knows. But they are the place where most people start when meeting a new person.
Unfortunately, these “windows” can use a little help. The skin around the eyes is some of the first on the face to show the signs of aging. Why? A few reasons really. First, the skin in this area is among the thinnest on the entire human body. Because of this, sun and environmental damage shows itself all too easily. And your eyes are always out there; they can’t hide under clothing. Yes, sunglasses help, but we can’t all wear them all the time! Plus, fat deposits, loosening skin, and other issues can leave a person with droopy, sagging, puffy, wrinkled skin around the eyes. That adds up to a much older appearance.
But Dr. Saltz can take 10 years off your face with eyelid surgery, formally known as blepharoplasty. Eyelid surgery removes excess skin and fat, and tightens the underlying muscles as needed to give your eyes and your overall face a much younger, refreshed countenance.
Year in and year out, blepharoplasty is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries in Utah because its results are dramatic, yet at the same time subtle. Unlike more dramatic procedures such as breast augmentation or a facelift, after you’ve had eyelid surgery most people won’t know you’ve had surgery, only that your appearance somehow seems younger and refreshed. And in Utah with our high levels of UV exposure and harsh winter weather, doesn’t that sound good?
Is eyelid surgery right for me?
Unlike many cosmetic surgery procedures, blepharoplasty is popular with both women and men. Why is this? Drooping eyelids, wrinkles, and puffy bags under your eyes show no differentiation by sex — they make everyone look much older. In fact, each year more and more men are opting to have blepharoplasty to maintain a younger appearance when competing in the workplace.
When you have your consultation with Dr. Saltz you’ll discuss your goals for your eyelid surgery. It can be performed on both eyelids or singly, depending on your personal situation. Because of this, surgery can run anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours.
Blepharoplasty is a delicate surgery that involves small incisions. In upper eyelid surgery, Dr. Saltz makes a small incision in the natural crease of the eyelid. This conceals any scarring. He tightens the muscle tissue, repositions the fat, and removes excess skin. Dr. Saltz pays special attention to the fat — removing too much fat can leave a hollowed out appearance.
In the lower eyelid, the incision is usually made just below the lower eyelash. An alternative location can be making the incision inside the lower lid, removing any visible scarring. The location is usually predicated on the amount of skin that needs to be removed. Excess skin is removed to lessen wrinkles, bags, and general puffiness in this area.
Eyelid surgery with Dr. Saltz doesn’t involve a difficult recovery. After the procedure, your eyelids will be covered with light gauze. Pain is manageable, usually with over-the-counter medication. You will be given an eye lubricant and a cold compress. Bruising and swelling is minor, particularly if you are diligent with the compress. After a week, your stitches are removed and your eyelids generally will look normal, only younger!
Eyelid surgery with Dr. Saltz is not overly difficult, but delivers impressive results that aren’t openly obvious. If you’re interested in taking a decade off the age of your face, call us at either our Salt Lake or Park City offices to make an appointment.
