Ready for Some Spray-On Exfoliation

OK, that headline brought to mind infomercials about spray-on hair. Could the Bass-o-Matic be next? At Spa Vitoria, we sometimes think of microdermabrasion as spray-on exfoliation because the procedure sprays fine crystals onto the face to remove the dull, unhealthy outer layer of your facial skin. Microdermabrasion delivers excellent exfoliation without any downtime.
What is microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion uses aluminum oxide or sodium chloride crystals to resurface the superficial layer of the epidermis. It’s a cool procedure where the handpiece sprays crystals onto the targeted facial skin and vacuums them back off at the same time. Of course, with the used crystals come all sorts of dead skin cells and other impurities that were on the facial skin.
At Spa Vitoria, we use microdermabrasion to improve sun damage, fine lines, age spots, acne, and superficial scarring.
How is the procedure done?
We start your microdermabrasion session with a thorough cleansing of your facial skin to remove any make-up and oil. We give you some protective eye covers, and then we take the handpiece and pass it over the treatment area. The degree of exfoliation is determined by the amount of suction used and the number of passes made over the skin surface. When we’re finished, we brush off any residual chemicals and apply a cold, wet towel to your face. The session ends with application of a moisturizer.
Is microdermabrasion like dermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion and dermabrasion are wholly different procedures. Dermabrasion uses a rotating metal brush or diamond wheel to remove layers of skin. In dermabrasion, the rotating brush abrades layers of skin, causing some bleeding. It is a very aggressive procedure and requires serious recovery time as the skin heals and grows new skin to replace the abraded skin. Patients require either topical or full anesthesia for the procedure.
In contrast, microdermabrasion only removes the outer epidermis. The procedure delivers a light exfoliation, removing dead skin cells and other unwanted items on the skin, but there isn’t any downtime or recovery. Patients don’t even require a topical anesthetic with microdermabrasion.
