Fall Is A Great Time to Ditch Your Unwanted Hair
- Posted on: Oct 15 2019
Just because we’re mammals doesn’t mean we have to like the way hair grows on certain areas of our bodies. Many men watch the hair on their head thin as the hair on their shoulders thickens! And women hate those pesky hairs that occasionally show up on the chin or peachfuzz above the upper lip!
But you can tell your mammal genes to cool it with laser hair removal at Saltz Plastic Surgery/Spa Vitoria. Fall is a great time to start the process of getting rid of the hair for good.
Ditch the razor
Getting rid of unwanted hair is sort of like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day. You shave, pluck, wax, or apply harsh depilatory creams to remove the hair, but then two weeks later there it is again so you have to do it all over. Over the course of her life, it’s estimated that a woman will spend over $10,000 on shaving, $25,000 for waxing.
Laser hair removal reduces your hair permanently. Because all of our roughly five million hairs can be in different phases of the hair growth cycle, it’s virtually impossible to remove every single unwanted hair, but laser hair removal can permanently get rid of 85-90 percent.
How it works
The key to successfully removing unwanted hair is the melanin in the hair shaft. It’s what gives your hair, and your skin, its color. At Spa Vitoria, our laser hair removal experts match the laser wavelength to the color of your hair. Then we deliver brief pulses of laser light down onto those unwanted hairs. The melanin in the hair shaft absorbs the light energy and it converts to heat. Heat travels down the hair shaft into the hair follicle where the hair is anchored. The heat damages or destroys the hair follicle, stopping it from growing hair in the future.
Timing is everything
As with much in life, timing is everything when it comes to zapping those unwanted hairs. You see, hair has three phases of its growth cycle: growth, transition, and rest. The hair is only actively anchored in the hair follicle during the growth phase. During transition and rest the hair is in the process of being shed. Laser energy can only impact the follicle during the growth phase; it has no effect on hairs in the transition or resting phases.
That’s why it takes multiple sessions to remove more and more hair — we have to catch the hairs in the growth phase. For most patients, they feel six sessions is about right to achieve the degree of permanent hair reduction they seek. These sessions need to be spaced from 4-6 weeks apart.
Now you see why fall is a great time to come in to Spa Vitoria and start your laser hair removal treatments. That way come next spring and summer, you’ll be ditching the razor and loving your new hair-free self.
