Giving Your Skin the Laser Treatment

At Saltz Plastic Surgery we use lasers for skin resurfacing in two different ways, ablative and non-ablative. You may have heard different terms for these procedures: laser peels, laser skin resurfacing, laser vaporization, or laserbrasion. These treatments can address a variety of skin issues, from blemishes to sun spots to enlarged pores.

What are the skin conditions addressed with laser resurfacing?

These are the skin flaws we target with lasers at Saltz:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, mouth, and on the forehead
  • Acne scars
  • Chickenpox scars
  • Sun damage spots
  • Non-responsive skin after a facelift
  • Warts
  • Liver spots
  • Yellow or gray skin tones
  • Birthmarks
  • Enlarged oil glands on the nose

What happens during a laser peel?

We offer two types of laser procedures, ablative and non-ablative.

  • Ablative laser peels— These peels are similar to dermabrasion, where the top layer of the epidermis is targeted. We use light wavelengths that convert to heat energy and vaporize a thin layer of your surface skin. By removing this layer, new, unblemished skin replaces it and the results can be very dramatic.

But, again like dermabrasion, ablative laser resurfacing is an aggressive treatment that will require recovery time. The treatment sites will become dry and peel. The skin will look and feel raw and will require ointment for up to four weeks. It will crust over. You’ll need to avoid facial soaps and any sun exposure. Even after healing, the skin will remain red for a few weeks.

  • Non-ablative laser resurfacing— These peels leave the epidermis intact and instead deliver laser energy into the dermis, the skin’s second layer. This laser energy stimulates the dermis to trigger a wound response in the body, producing new collagen at the treatment sites. There is no recovery time with our non-ablative treatments. Because these treatments are not as aggressive, generally a series of treatments is necessary to achieve your goals.
