Leave the Doubles to the Bees

In the summer, “double” is often associated with a two-bagger on the baseball diamond. A warm summer evening at Smith’s Ballpark watching the Bees is the perfect place for lots of doubles.

But under your chin, double is a dirty word.

We usually think it’s “other” people who have double chins. People like the poster boy for double chins, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. But in reality, most of us have some business going on under the chin as we age.

Of course, if you don’t like the sound of the phrase double chin, you could always refer to it by the clinical name, submental fullness. But that won’t make it go away.

A new prescription injectable can beat up on your double chin. It’s called Kybella, and Dr. Saltz offers it. Kybella® is the prescription brand name for an injection formulated with deoxycholic acid that dramatically improves the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin, the proverbial double chin.

OK, you’re not Chris Christie, but most people have a double chin

If you’ve got some junk under your jaw, you’re not alone. The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery conducted a survey in 2015 and found that 67% of people said they’re bothered by a double chin. And people in the survey were equally bugged by their double chin as they were about wrinkles and other signs of aging.

Aging and sagging skin go together like dumb presidents and Twitter. There are a variety of factors that play a part: the pull of gravity, simple aging (where decreasing production of collagen means the skin has less underlying support), genetics (some people simply have looser skin below the jawline), and weight gain. All of these factors cause our skin to droop. Under the chin, where the skin has no underlying support, this drooping will be very visible.

Kybella® beats up on double chins

Until the arrival of Kybella in 2015, the only way to address a double chin was with surgery, either a facelift or neck lift. But Kybella now gives you a non-surgical alternative.

The basis of Kybella® is deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body whose job is to aid in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath the chin, Kybella® (and its deoxycholic acid) destroys the fat cells. After those cells are gone, there is no longer a storage mechanism to accumulate fat in the area. So your double chin shouldn’t return!

Multiple treatments yield the best results

Dr. Saltz customizes his Kybella® treatments for every patient. Some patients see the results they want after two to four treatments; others require six (that is the maximum number allowed by the FDA). The number of treatments will depend on the amount of fat stored under your chin, along with your desired final profile. Each treatment is spaced four weeks apart.

Doubles are for the Bees, not for your chin. Call Dr. Saltz at either our Salt Lake City or Park City offices and ask about Kybella.
