Sir Mix-a-Lot Was Before His Time

It turns out Sir Mix-a-Lot was before his time. His ode to big-butted women, Baby’s Got Back, was somewhat scandalous when it was released in 1992, particularly the music video. But now, everyone wants a bigger, rounder backside. Just look at the popularity of the backsides of celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Nicky Minaj, and J-Lo.

And they haven’t been shy about augmenting their natural bottoms. Word is that Kardashian and Minaj have both supplemented. Fitness expert Annie Phillipeos, owner of Movement X was quoted in a story on Zalea.com to that effect. “There is a big bum trend, but people understand that it’s not just squatting all day that will get you a bum like Kim or Khloe Kardashian. Squatting can help make your bum rounder, lift and tone it, but it cannot make it the size that either celebrity has unless you have some surgical enhancement like a fat injection.”

Formerly, the only way to increase the booty was with butt implants. But the procedure is tricky. The implants have to be placed very precisely and if they move the result can be comical…and require revision surgery. Plus, the patient isn’t able to really sit down for weeks after the surgery. For these reasons, people have been avoiding butt implants.

Today, the most popular method is the Brazilian butt lift, which takes fat from an area on your body where it is unwanted — say the thighs, abdomen, or lower back — removes it with liposuction, purifies it, and then re-injects it back into the butt.

Because the procedure uses the patient’s own fat, the possibility of rejection or allergic reaction is virtually nil. And by making hundreds of injections at different depths, the fat distribution can make for a very natural look, albeit it far more round and pronounced.

And by using the person’s own fat, the procedure is somewhat permanent. Doctors inject from one third to half again as much fat as they think they will actually want in the augmentation. Why? Because some of the fat doesn’t “take,” meaning it doesn’t survive and thrive in its new home in the bigger booty. Depending on the situation, from 60 to 80% of the transferred fat takes, hence the need to inject more than the final result would require.

In the Zalea.com story, Dr. Maheshvari Naidu, an anthropologist from the University of KaZulu-Natal School of Social Sciences talked of this trend toward bigger butts. “Body modifications have been around for centuries and augmentation of parts such as the breasts is not new,” he said. “Such changes or modification fit a greater cultural understanding that stretches to our pre-industrial past — treating the body like a canvas that can be shaped, pierced, and tattooed.”

Question is — are you going to treat your body, more pointedly your booty, like a canvas and increase its size and shape? If you are, you’re not alone!
