The Truth About Supplements and Plastic Surgery

Most patients realize the importance of notifying Dr. Saltz of the many prescription drugs that they may be taking in addition to those he prescribes for them. Prescription drugs may commonly interact with one another, posing potential risk for side effects that patients should be aware of. Some prescription medications that you may be taking might completely prevent you from undergoing plastic surgery with Dr. Saltz.
However, not all patients realize the importance of also disclosing their non-prescription medications and supplement use to Dr. Saltz prior to undergoing cosmetic surgery.

In fact when it comes to cosmetic surgery, some supplements may help with the body’s healing process, while others may be detrimental to your body’s ability to heal itself following surgery. It is very important to notify Dr. Saltz of all of the vitamins and supplements you are taking, and know the difference between their potential side effects.

Before undergoing surgery, it is helpful to consume lots of antioxidants, Vitamin A, Vitamin C and zinc. However, Vitamin A should be discontinued soon after surgery. These substances are helpful in that they may work as a natural anti-inflammatory agent and reduce your potential for bruising.

Both before and after surgery though, you should be sure to avoid Vitamin E, Ginger, Garlic and Ceyenne. These supplements may inhibit your blood’s ability to clot. Gingko Biloba is also potentially dangerous after your surgery because it can lead to prolonged bleeding. Finally, ginseng is also to be avoided because it can lead to a spike in blood pressure.

Before you undergo any surgical procedure it is important to disclose your medication and supplement use to Dr. Saltz. Doing so may prevent detrimental side effects and additional hours in surgery or recovery.
