BREAST REDUCTION

What is Reduction Mammoplasty?

A woman wanting to decrease the size of her breasts could seem counterintuitive these days. After all, the number of breast augmentation surgeries increases every year. More and more women are opting to have smaller breasts since overly large breasts can be painful, both physically and mentally. The excessive weight can lead to back pain and nerve damage. And overly large breasts can lead to issues of low self-image and self-consciousness, where the person begins to avoid social interaction.

Breast reduction surgery, known as reduction mammoplasty, is a surgery performed to remove excess breast fat, glandular tissue, and skin to reduce the size of the breasts. Women who experience hypermastia, or overly large breasts, often consider a reduction to improve their everyday life.

Breast reduction surgery, known as reduction mammoplasty, is a surgery performed to remove excess breast fat, glandular tissue, and skin to reduce the size of the breasts. Women who experience hypermastia, or overly large breasts, often consider a reduction to improve their everyday life.

Having overly large breasts (hypermastia) can cause physical discomfort and health problems such as:

  • Backaches
  • Spine problems
  • Neck pain
  • Tingling in the hands
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Balance problems

Large breasts can preclude women from participating in sports and certain types of exercise. And they can make a woman feel overly self-conscious about her breasts and their disproportionate size in relation to her body. This self-consciousness can affect a person’s life, both socially and professionally.

Breast reduction surgery is intended to help women of any age experience greater comfort and confidence by reducing the size of their breasts. Breast reduction not only improves the symptoms related to overly large breasts, but also adds a breast lift, repositioning the nipples and areolae to a higher position and re-shaping the breasts to a smaller, more natural and beautiful look to match the overall chest size.

Prior to surgery, you will have a consultation with Dr. Saltz to discuss your expectations and goals for your breast reduction. It is a good idea to do some research about the procedure beforehand, viewing before-and-after photos and learning about the surgery. In your discussion, Dr. Saltz will determine if breast reduction is right for you, both physically and mentally.

During the surgery, the initial incisions are made around the areolae in a circular or T shaped pattern. Underlying breast tissue is removed, shaped, and repositioned. Usually, the nipples and areolae are moved to a higher position on the breast. The areolae can also be trimmed, if desired.

Dressing or bandages will be placed around your incisions as well as an elastic bandage support bra to fully support the new tissue position. You will also have small tubes inserted in your breasts to drain any excess fluids caused by surgery.

Most patients will need at least one week off from work and normal daily activities before getting back to their routine. Physical activity, such as exercise, will have to be put off for at least six weeks. Dr. Saltz will discuss the specific recovery timeline best suited for you.

Dr. Saltz is often able to preserve nipple sensation and the ability to breastfeed after breast reduction; however, these will depend on the type of surgical procedure performed as well as the specific anatomy of your breasts.

Insurance often covers the entire breast reduction surgery because of the various health issues related to hypermastia (large breasts). Be sure to contact your insurance company about how much of the cost they will cover. All surgical expenses will be discussed during your consultation. Although Dr. Saltz is not a preferred provider with any insurance plan, we can provide you with documentation to submit to your insurance company post-surgery so you can seek reimbursement.
