Spider Vein InjectionsSalt Lake City & Park City
Spider veins, those small purple, blue, or red blood vessels that show up on your legs, ankles, feet, and occasionally the face are an unwelcome milestone of advancing age. They are a progressive condition, their numbers increasing with age. Although the exact cause of spider veins is unknown, it is thought there is a genetic tendency towards their development.
Spider vein therapy, known medically as sclerotherapy, uses injections to eliminate the veins.
Spider veins should not be confused with varicose veins, which are larger, deeper veins that are deeper purple in color and can push out the skin above them. Varicose veins can also be painful, whereas spider veins are usually pain free.
How are spider vein injections performed?
Spider vein therapy is an outpatient procedure. You will be lying down during treatment, and you may have some slight discomfort during the injection process.
A sclerosion solution is injected into each vein selected for treatment. This solution irritates the lining of the vein, causing it to swell and the blood in it to clot. Once that happens, the vein turns into scar tissue and fades away. Usually, one injection is required for every inch of visible vein.
The treatment of spider veins in the lower extremities normally requires multiple treatments at two- to four-week intervals. Sometimes, usually in the lower leg or for larger veins, laser therapy is used in conjunction with the injections to obtain the desired results.
Recovery after spider vein injections
Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical treatment that doesn’t really require a recovery period. You will be required to wear compression stockings/hose for up to one week following the treatment. Walking is encouraged after the injections, and you should avoid prolonged sitting, standing, and pounding types of exercise.
You may feel some cramping in your legs for a day or two after the injections. There may also be some slight bruising, but this will fade in a week or two. In some many cases, there may be some residual brownish pigmentation which gradually fades over time.
Cost of spider vein therapy
On average, spider vein therapy costs about $300 per treatment session. The total cost varies depending on how many injections you need and whether or not you will require additional injection visits or laser therapy. Your potential costs will be discussed by Dr. Saltz prior to treatment.
