What is Brazilian Butt Lift?

Brazilian Butt Lift (a type of gluteoplasty) is performed to enlarge, and possibly reshape, buttocks that have not responded to diet or exercise. Candidates for buttock augmentation are unhappy with the lack of fullness, roundness, and projection of their buttocks, and/or with having asymmetrical buttocks. Significantly more women than men seek to have their buttocks augmented, but in recent years, the number of men has increased.

The goal of a Brazilian butt lift/butt augmentation with Dr. Saltz is to enhance the patient’s natural curves. This procedure can add volume and roundness to a flat or small butt. This can add size, giving the patient a more prominent butt.

The only question of candidacy with a Brazilian butt lift is that the patient needs to have enough unwanted fat to harvest to then use for transplanting to the butt.

Many of us aren’t born with the shapely bottom we’d like. You could feel your butt is too flat, particularly on the upper portion. You could feel it lacks shape to fill out your pants the way you’d like. If you’ve never liked the lack of shape of your buttocks, these procedures will fill out your backside. Your new shapelier bottom will look great in slacks and swimsuits. You can shop for styles that accentuate your new curves. Round, curvy figures are in these days, thankfully replacing the emaciated looks of the past couple of decades.

Brazilian butt lifts have become far and away from the more popular procedure, due to the problems that can develop with butt implants. They also have the added benefit of removing fat from an unwanted area, such as the waist, flanks, thighs, or lower abdomen. That liposuction slims your contour in that area. Dr. Saltz can use targeted liposuction to actually enhance the results of your augmentation, as well.

Butt lifts can deliver the curvy backside that many women seek today. These procedures increase the fullness, roundness, and projection of your buttocks.

Buttock augmentation is performed with a fat transfer at our office.

The fat used for buttock augmentation is usually taken from the patient’s abdomen, hips, thighs, or lower back. Fat is removed using liposuction, in which a cannula (a thin, hollow tube) is inserted through small incisions, and then moved back and forth to loosen excess fat, which is suctioned out using a vacuum or cannula-attached syringe. The fat is then purified and injected into the buttocks at different depths for maximum absorption.

It can take up to a year to see the final results of fat transfer buttock augmentation because the fat needs time to be completely absorbed. The results of buttock augmentation using fat transfer are often more natural-looking than those from implants. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, patients tend to retain 60 to 80 percent of fat that has been transferred.

After buttock augmentation with fat transfer, a compression garment must be worn for 2 to 3 weeks. For at least 2 weeks, patients should not sit directly on the buttocks; placing a pillow beneath the back of the legs to raise the buttocks and keep pressure off them is required. Sleeping facedown or on the side is also recommended. Patients typically experience pain/discomfort, bruising, and swelling after the procedure. Recovery time for fat-transfer patients is typically quick, with most patients going back to work within 10 to 14 days, and resuming exercise after 8 weeks.

In addition to the risks associated with any surgery, those related to buttock augmentation using fat transfer include the following:

  • Cellulite
  • Stretch marks
  • Asymmetry
  • Fat embolism

Buttock augmentation with fat transfer includes the risks related to liposuction, which include indentations in the skin, scarring, and contour irregularities.

During your consultation, Dr. Saltz will discuss your goals with you. He’ll discuss all options and you’ll ask any questions you may have. At that point, we can give you a precise estimate of the cost.

How Long Does a Butt Lift Last?

The fat cells that survive the transplant process are expected to remain viable indefinitely. The transplanted fat cells will behave no differently than the fat cells that were originally in the buttocks. This means that, if you gain weight, your buttocks may grow larger. Likewise, if you lose weight, the fat cells in the buttocks are may shrink and you may lose the volume that you gained through your surgery. Provided that you sustain a stable weight, you can enjoy the same perky shape 10 years after your butt lift as you did soon after surgery.

Is Butt Lift Surgery Painful?

The BBL procedure is performed with local or general anesthesia. Multiple studies have shown that local anesthetic is a wonderful, low-risk option for procedures like liposuction and fat transfer. Using this method, Dr. Saltz ensures your comfort in both the harvest site and the recipient site, your buttocks. Because you are not fully under anesthesia, as you would be with general anesthesia, you will be completely alert sooner after your procedure is done, and will remain comfortable through the use of prescription pain medication throughout your initial recovery period.

Are Butt Lift Procedures Covered by Insurance?

The butt lift procedure is a popular plastic surgery technique that is performed for cosmetic purposes. It is an elective procedure that you have done to improve your overall body contours and is not deemed medically necessary. Therefore, insurance companies do not cover the costs of this surgery.

What Butt Lift Side Effects Should I Expect?

The side effects associated with the butt lift procedure are very similar to other plastic surgeries. These are usually limited to common side effects like bruising, soreness, and swelling. These can occur in both surgical sites, the area from which fat is taken, and the buttocks, where fat is inserted. Due to the use of small incisions, there is a slight risk of infection and bleeding after butt lift surgery. There is also a risk of accidental injection into a blood vessel or the development of a blood clot or fat embolism. These side effects can be serious and must be treated immediately. With proper surgical practices and safety protocols, the risk of complications is extraordinarily low.
