Buttock augmentation (a type of gluteoplasty) is performed to enlarge, and possibly reshape, buttocks that have not responded to diet or exercise. Candidates for buttock augmentation are unhappy with the lack of fullness, roundness, and projection of their buttocks, and/or with having asymmetrical buttocks. Significantly more women than men seek to have their buttocks augmented, but in recent years, the number of men has increased.
Who is a good candidate for a butt lift or butt augmentation?
The goal of a Brazilian butt lift or butt augmentation with implants with Dr. Saltz is to enhance the patient’s natural curves. These procedures can add volume and roundness to a flat or small butt. They can add size, giving the patient a more prominent butt. Implants can deliver a larger change in shape than a Brazilian butt lift.
The only question of candidacy with a Brazilian butt lift is that the patient needs to have enough unwanted fat to harvest to then use for transplanting to the butt. If the patient doesn’t have the required fat, she would need to opt for implant augmentation.
What are the benefits of butt lifts or augmentation?
Many of us aren’t born with the shapely bottom we’d like. You could feel your butt is too flat, particularly on the upper portion. You could feel it lacks shape to fill out your pants the way you’d like. If you’ve never liked the lack of shape of your buttocks, these procedures will fill out your backside. Your new shapelier bottom will look great in slacks and swimsuits. You can shop for styles that accentuate your new curves. Round, curvy figures are in these days, thankfully replacing the emaciated looks of the past couple of decades.
Brazilian butt lifts have become far and away from the more popular procedure, due to the problems that can develop with butt implants. They also have the added benefit of removing fat from an unwanted area, such as the waist, flanks, thighs, or lower abdomen. That liposuction slims your contour in that area. Dr. Saltz can use targeted liposuction to actually enhance the results of your augmentation, as well.
What results can I achieve with buttock augmentation?
If you’re looking to add more volume to your buttocks, you may not be able to gain the size you desire through fat transfer. These patients would be better served by butt augmentation with the placement of silicone implants. These are also typically necessary for thinner patients who do not have the necessary fat that could be used for fat transfer.
Butt lifts can deliver the curvy backside that many women seek today. These procedures increase the fullness, roundness, and projection of your buttocks. This degree of change cannot be achieved with a fat transfer.
How is butt augmentation with implants performed?
For butt augmentation, Dr. Saltz places the implants underneath the glute muscles. During your consultation, together you’ll select the shape of the implants you will have placed. Butt implants can be either round or oval; they can have cohesive gel filling or be made from solid silicone, and they can be smooth or textured.
To place the implants, Dr. Saltz makes incisions within the buttock crease. This location hides the incisions very well. The implants are then placed in strategic positions under the gluteal muscles to create the shape and volume changes desired. Implants placed on top of the gluteal muscles are prone to problems and Dr. Saltz instead places them under the muscle.

Types Of Buttock Augmentation
Buttock augmentation is usually performed with implants or fat transfer, or a combination of the two. Which method is used depends primarily on the shape and size of the buttocks, the skin’s quality and elasticity, and the amount of body fat available for transfer.
Fat Transfer For Buttock Augmentation
The fat used for buttock augmentation is usually taken from the patient’s abdomen, hips, thighs, or lower back. Fat is removed using liposuction, in which a cannula (a thin, hollow tube) is inserted through small incisions, and then moved back and forth to loosen excess fat, which is suctioned out using a vacuum or cannula-attached syringe. The fat is then purified and injected into the buttocks at different depths for maximum absorption.
It can take up to a year to see the final results of fat transfer buttock augmentation because the fat needs time to be completely absorbed. The results of buttock augmentation using fat transfer are often more natural-looking than those from implants, but a downside of the fat-transfer method is that the body reabsorbs part of the fat over time, so some of the initial fullness is lost. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, patients tend to retain 60 to 80 percent of fat that has been transferred.
Recovery From Buttock Augmentation
After buttock augmentation with fat transfer or implants, a compression garment must be worn for 2 to 3 weeks. For at least 2 weeks, patients should not sit directly on the buttocks; placing a pillow beneath the back of the legs to raise the buttocks and keep pressure off them is required. Sleeping facedown or on the side is also recommended. Patients typically experience pain/discomfort, bruising, and swelling after the procedure. Implant patients typically go back to work in 2 or 3 weeks, but may not be able to resume exercising for 8 to 10 weeks. Recovery time for fat-transfer patients is slightly quicker, with most going back to work within 10 to 14 days, and resuming exercise after 8 weeks.
