If you’ve ever given any thought to how your skin ages, and maybe a little research, then you probably know a little something about collagen. Collagen is a naturally occurring protein in the skin that is responsible for the structure that supports the skin. With lots of collagen, the skin is firm, taut, and has few wrinkles.
The problem is after the age of 20, for some dumb reason, humans lose one additional percent of their collagen production every year. When you reach 50, your collagen production is now down 30%! Welcome, loose skin and wrinkles!
Sculptra, a dermal filler, aims to replace some of that missing collagen. Dr. Saltz uses Sculptra to correct shallow to deep facial wrinkles and folds.
What’s so different about Sculptra?
Most fillers do exactly what you would think — they “fill” the wrinkle from below with gel or hyaluronic acid. Results are instant as they push the skin upward.
Sculptra is different; like a fine wine it takes time. This filler is made from poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which works within the skin to replace lost collagen. Sculptra’s results improve over time as collagen is replaced. This makes for a natural-looking appearance that improves over time, not an instant change as with other fillers. Dr. Saltz usually recommends two to four injection sessions over a few months for the best results. These results can then last for over two years! That’s longer than a Hollywood marriage!
How does Sculptra work?
Dr. Saltz injects Sculptra into the deep dermal layer of the skin. Microparticles of PLLA work within the deep dermis to rebuild lost collagen and provide structural skin support. As the PLLA is absorbed a collagen framework is created. This reinforced collagen structure provides a foundation that gradually restores the look of fullness to shallow to deep wrinkles and folds.
Where can Sculptra be used?
Sculptra is effective for:
- Deep folds between the nose and mouth (nasolabial folds), also called smile lines
- The lines framing your mouth (marionette lines)
- Chin wrinkles
