Spider veins sound creepy — perfect for Halloween! But the small red, purple, and blue blood vessels that show themselves on the legs, chest, and face are quite scary when you’re considering putting on a bathing suit for some water skiing at Jordanelle or bike shorts for a ride on the Mid-Mountain Trail. Their twisting, turning paths give them their name, not some sort of Spiderman association. Spider veins, while not as painful or as large as varicose veins, are an unattractive addition, especially on the legs and face because they can be seen through the skin.
Fortunately, at Spa Vitoria we can make your spider veins disappear, so you’ll feel good showing off your legs again. We put our Cutera Laser on the job.
What contributes to the development of spider veins?
There are a variety of factors that contribute to a person developing spider veins:
- Use of birth control pills
- Occupations that require a good deal of standing
- Hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy, puberty, and menopause
- Hormone replacement therapy
- A history of blood clots
- Tight clothing around the abdomen
Treatment at Spa Vitoria
Our laser vein treatments remove the unwanted veins by selectively targeting the hemoglobin and the blood vessel wall, which causes photocoagulation of the vein. When we are setting the wavelength of our Cutera Laser, we match it to the hemoglobin in the vein. We then deliver the short pulses of laser energy onto the area over the spider vein cluster. The light energy is absorbed by the hemoglobin and it converts to heat. This heat inside the vein causes the walls to constrict and collapse. This closes off the vein. Instantly the appearance is dramatically lessened, and any residual appearance fades away over the next few weeks as the body scavenges the now-unused vein. Laser vein removal usually works in one to two sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. Laser vein removal is superior to sclerotherapy as it can be used on any part of the body and is painless.
