There are different ways to exfoliate the skin, but few are as effective and simple as dermaplaning with the team at Saltz Spa Vitoria in Salt Lake City and Park City, UT. Dermaplaning manually exfoliates the skin, removing the outer layer of dead skin cells, along with unwanted facial hair. It’s basically what men have been doing every morning since the razor blade was invented!
Sometimes patients mix up the procedures of dermaplaning and dermabrasion, but they are not remotely related. Dermabrasion is a medical procedure where the skin is abraded all the way down to the dermis. The procedure has lengthy recovery times and can lead to complications.
Dermaplane, in contrast, is a simple shaving of the epidermis. The practice is sometimes also known as epidermal leveling or blading. We love its exfoliation at Saltz Spa Vitoria.

How is Dermaplaning Done?
The dermaplaning procedure is really very simple. Your aestheticist holds a scalpel at a 45% angle to the skin and abrades the surface in the opposite direction of hair growth. This is the superficial vellus hair and a dermaplane appointment removes it, although it will grow back. A pattern is followed, eventually abrading the entire face, or at least the target areas. Dermaplaning can be done alone, or can be precursor to other procedures such as chemical peels. At Spa Vitoria, we have a number of great light peels that work well with after a dermaplane session.
What Conditions are Good for Dermaplaning?
- Unwanted facial hair
- Uneven skin tone
- Rough skin texture
- Mild surface wrinkles
- Acne scars
- Blackheads
- Enlarged pores
What Can I Expect During Recovery?
There really isn’t any downtime with dermaplaning. In rare cases patients form a crust over the treated areas, but this flakes off soon. Otherwise, other than applying moisturizer and sunscreen, most patients can return immediately to their normal activities.
