Crystals Will Improve Your Skin…Without Shirley MacLaine

When it comes to crystals, Shirley MacLaine and Yanni ruined it. If you utter the word crystal now, people instantly assume someone’s going to start talking about reincarnation and throw on a Yanni CD.

Crystals have a better use for Dr. Saltz. At his practice, we use aluminum oxide or sodium chloride crystals to resurface the superficial layer of your skin. The procedure is known as microdermabrasion.

What does microdermabrasion do?

Microdermabrasion with Dr. Saltz is an exfoliation of the surface layer of your epidermis. We recommend that patients have the procedure before having facial surgeries such as facelifts, brow lifts, or midface lifts. Otherwise, we use a series of from three to six sessions to enhance the skin’s hydration, sebum production, and texture. Microdermabrasion brightens dull skin by removing dead skin cells, dirt, and oil.

Would microdermabrasion be good for my skin?

At Saltz, we have found that microdermabrasion is a good non-invasive treatment for patients with at least one of these skin conditions:

  • Oily skin
  • Dilated pores
  • Thick skin
  • Mild, shallow acne scarring
  • Melasma
  • Solar lentigines

Patients with any of these conditions should not have microdermabrasion: severe rosacea, telangiectasias, uncontrolled diabetes, active acne, skin cancer, dermatitis, sunburned skin, Accutane users, oral blood thinner users.

How is microdermabrasion done?

Microdermabrasion is safe and well tolerated, and we don’t administer any numbing agents unless the patient requests it. The microdermabrasion handpiece is moved over the treatment areas slowly. The handpiece showers the skin with microscopic crystals. The crystals lightly resurface the skin. At the same time as the delivery of the crystals, the handpiece applies suction to remove the used crystals and any skin cells and other debris. The degree of exfoliation, which is unique to each patient, depends on both the amount of suction employed and the number of passes made over the treatment area.

Afterwards

Microdermabrasion can leave your skin looking as if it is lightly sunburned. It can become a little dry and will likely peel lightly. These side effects are just part of the exfoliation process and will run their course in five days to a week.
