Twelve Little Needles for Better Skin

Microneedling | Salt Lake City, UT The human body has miraculous healing mechanisms. Last month we talked about platelet-rich plasma and its healing and growth factors for use in skin rejuvenation. But creating small wounds that don’t scar but trigger a wound response in the body is equally effective. It’s called microneedling.

Originally, the idea was introduced in the 1950s with a dermaroller, This device had a roller covered with tiny needles. It was rolled back and forth across the treatment areas not unlike an aerator on your lawn. Needless to say, the dermaroller didn’t catch on. In the 1990s, tattoo guns were used for the same purpose, without ink, to improve post-surgical scarring.

Those were precursors to the vastly improved microneedling that is done today. At Saltz Plastic Surgery/Spa Vitoria we use the Dermapen, a small handheld device that resembles a pen. It contains 12 microneedles that move up and down as the Dermapen is moved across the treatment areas. Our expert aestheticians can set the penetration depth to suit your needs (up to 2mm). The Dermapen then creates hundreds of tiny punctures through the epidermis into the skin’s second layer, the dermis. This triggers a wound healing response, which improves the skin texture and overall quality.

How does microneedling work?

When the Dermapen is moved across your skin, the microneedles move up and down continuously. This creates hundreds of microscopic wounds into the dermis. When the body senses these punctures, it responds with what is known as a wound-healing mechanism. The first action is to remodel the existing collagen in the area of the wound. This instantly tightens the skin. The second aspect provides deeper results, as the body triggers new production of collagen to “heal” the perceived wounds. Collagen is the protein in human skin that is responsible for creating a structural framework to support the skin. As we age our collagen production continues to decline every year; this is why our skin sags and develops wrinkles. By supplying new collagen over the weeks following your microneedling procedure, your body firms and repairs the “wounded” skin. It breaks down existing acne scarring, shrinks overly large pores, and begins the process of producing new skin cells.

Good time for topical applications

Another great thing about microneedling is that the hundreds of punctures (so small that they heal within just a few hours) provide the perfect pathway for us to apply topical gels, serums, and creams. Instead of trying to get through the outer epidermis, now they can penetrate the skin more efficiently through the hundreds of tiny punctures. These topical applications further enhance the skin.

Microneedling is a great procedure for anyone. It can be used on all skin tones and will improve your skin. Call us in our Salt Lake City office, (801) 274-9500, or our Park City office, (435) 655-6612, to schedule your microneedling session
