Living in Utah, there’s no shortage of sun and cold weather to take a toll on your skin. The number one contributor to skin aging is sun exposure, and when you couple the intensity of high-altitude exposure it has even more power. Although skin aging, obviously, is inevitable, there are skin care treatments that can help you regain your youthful look.
At Spa Vitoria, one of our most popular treatments for skin improvement is Pearl Fractional.
What is Pearl Fractional laser treatment?
In a Pearl Fractional laser treatment, the laser uses heat to create tiny holes deep in the skin. The process breaks down damaged surface skin and initiates a healing response in dermis layer that stimulates the growth of new skin cells, collagen, and elastin.
This fractional laser treatment volumizes the skin, treating wrinkles and photoaging to restore a youthful look. It can also even out the skin’s tone and texture, smoothing out rough surfaces and brightening the complexion.
How does the Pearl Fractional compare to other Fractional Laser treatments?
As with all fractional laser treatments, microchannels are created in the skin penetrating the epidermis and entering the dermis beneath. This triggers the desired wound-healing response that improves the skin.
The difference with Pearl Fractional is the laser. Cutera’s Pearl Laser is neither a CO2 laser nor an Erbium laser. It is an Er:YSGG laser system. This stands for erbium:yttrium-scandium-gallium-garnet. It combines aspects of both ablative laser treatments and fractional laser treatments. These treatments are more aggressive and can deliver higher levels of results than other fractional treatments.
Where can Pearl Fractional treatment be used?
Pearl Fractional treatment may be used on the patient’s entire face, yet it is very effective on the delicate areas around the eyes and mouth, the areas of the face that show the first signs of aging. It also is effective on scars and stretch marks anywhere on the body.
What are the risks involved with Pearl Fractional Treatments?
The potential side effects from Pearl Fractional laser treatments include burns, scarring, hyperpigmentation, infection, and lingering redness.
What can I expect during my Pearl Fractional laser treatment?
When you arrive at our Saltz/Spa Vitoria location in Salt Lake or Park City, we first cleanse your skin. Then we apply topical numbing cream. This ensures the fractional laser treatment will be comfortable. We can also provide oral sedation, should you desire.
When we deliver the pulses from the Cutera Pearl fractional laser you’ll feel sensations that are similar to quick, hot pinches. The Pearl handpiece includes a scanner that controls the placement of 300 microchannels. Depending on what we are treating with your skin, multiple passes may be made across certain areas.
Your session only takes 20-30 minutes. When we are finished with the Pearl laser, we apply a healing serum across the treated areas.
“Dr. Saltz and his staff are always respectful, courteous and professional. They make every effort to make sure you understand procedures and are satisfied with your results. “ – C.A.
How does Pearl Fractional laser treatment work?
The name “fractional” comes from the way the laser treats only a fraction of the skin. This is done by emitting laser pulses directly into the affected area of the skin, creating microscopic holes. The fractional treatment selectively removes columns of tissue, leaving the surrounding skin intact. The surrounding skin instantly gets busy repairing the adjacent skin, improving surface issues such as texture.
Then the laser energy that has penetrated the epidermis down into the dermis creates a wound response. Any time the body senses heat in the dermis layer, it responds by remodeling the existing collagen at the wound location, and initiating new collagen and elastin production. This despite the fact that the microscopic wounds actually fully heal in just a couple of hours. This boost in collagen production continues for weeks and strengthens the skin quality and its structural support.
Is a Pearl Fractional session painful?
As mentioned above, we apply topical numbing anesthetic prior to your Pearl Fractional treatment. This ensures you will be comfortable. We also offer sedation if you would like to add that to help you relax.
You can feel when the laser energy is pulsed down onto your skin. Patients equate it to a pinching sensation. Most patients don’t equate the feeling with pain.
How many Pearl Fractional sessions will I need?
Our Spa Vitoria patients see nice improvement in their skin after a single Pearl Fractional session. The procedure works well on patients who have light to medium skin color and whose skin imperfections are due to sun damage and general aging.
Is there recovery after a Pearl Fractional treatment?
Your face will look and feel as if you have a moderate sunburn for a period of a few days up to about one week. Initially, you’ll have some pinpoint bleeding and oozing, and you’ll have some discomfort. Some amount of swelling is common.
Expect your skin to peel for up to four days. During that time, you will want to take it easy on any makeup you apply. Plus you need to stay out of the sun completely, as you won’t be able to apply sunscreen to your healing skin. Your skin will feel tight and somewhat inflamed. Itching can be a common sensation after a couple days.
Your skin will heal completely within one to two weeks, depending on your skin type and individual healing rates. Redness can persist, however. For the initial healing period, you’ll want to keep your skin moisturized with Aquaphor or a similar product during the peeling phase.
You’ll probably want to take a couple days off work, or you can have this done on a Friday and have the weekend to lay low.
“Dr. Saltz is wonderful, explains procedures in great detail and makes certain you’re satisfied with your results. I highly recommend him!” – J.D.
When can I see the results from my treatment?
You will need your initial redness and peeling to run their course before you will begin to see your results. With fractional laser treatments, there is some time as the skin works to rebuild after the fractional channels are made down through the epidermis into the dermis layer.
You’ll start to see improvements in your skin after about one week, as things calm down. From there, your results will continue to build for months. This is because when the laser energy has entered the dermis layer of your skin, the body assumes a wound has occurred. It responds with a “wound-healing response.” This involves instantly remodelling the existing collagen across the treatment areas, which tightens the skin. But the real response comes from a boost in the production of new collagen to heal the perceived wounds, although the microscopic fractional channels created actually heal within just a few hours. This collagen boost plumps and firms the skin for a period of up to six months.
When can I wear makeup after a Pearl Fractional treatment? Do I need to do anything else?
You should wait 72 hours before applying makeup.
It’s very important to protect your skin from any sun exposure because much of its defense against UV rays has been diminished by this treatment. For up to six months it’s a good idea to wear nothing but 30+ SPF sunscreen and cover up with clothing. Remember, it’s probably excessive sun exposure that predicated coming to Spa Vitoria for a Pearl Fractional treatment to begin with!
