What’s Behind Naturally Derived Dermal Fillers?

Salt Lake City is a hotbed of the aesthetic industry. Don’t believe it? Statistics compiled by RealSelf, the aesthetic website, place Salt Lake City as having the second highest number of plastic surgeons per capita in the U.S. Holly tummy tuck, Batman!

So Salt Lake people know a little bit about the aesthetic world, no doubt. To that end, if you’re reading this blog, you probably have heard of the term hyaluronic acid.

Hyaluronic acid is the basic ingredient in the class of dermal fillers known as “naturally derived” fillers. What makes them “naturally derived”? These fillers are classified that way because hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the human body. In fact, it occurs in just about every living thing. In humans, hyaluronic acid acts as a network that transfers essential nutrients from the bloodstream to the skin cells. At Saltz Plastic Surgery we use Juvederm, Volbella, and Voluma, three popular hyaluronic acid dermal fillers.

The ins and outs of hyaluronic acid

While many people may think hyaluronic acid is a new thing, it’s been around as long as we have. Hyaluronic acid is found throughout the human body. High concentrations are found in soft connective tissues and in the fluid surrounding your eyes. It’s also in cartilage and joint fluids. You may know someone with arthritis who gets injections of hyaluronic acid to ease the pain in their joints and to provide extra cushioning.

When hyaluronic acid gel is injected for aesthetic reasons, it acts like an inflated cushion supporting facial structures and tissues that may have lost volume or elasticity due to normal aging. Hyaluronic acid binds with water molecules to plump and hydrate the skin.

What issues can hyaluronic acid fillers address?

At Saltz, we use hyaluronic acid dermal fillers to improve the skin’s contour and reduce depressions in the skin due to scars, injury, or simple aging. These are some of the issues we treat with these hyaluronic acid fillers:

  • Acne scars
  • Cheek depressions
  • Crow’s feet
  • Nasolabial lines
  • Frown lines between the eyebrows
  • Marionette lines
  • Redefining lip borders
  • Acne scars
  • Wound scars
  • Smoker’s lines
  • Worry lines

Look but don’t touch

At Saltz, most of our dermal filler sessions take 30 minutes or less. Following your session, it’s very important that you do not rub the injection areas, as this can make the filler migrate to an unwanted area.

Because hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the body, allergic reactions are very rare. Otherwise, the injection sites may become slightly red, swollen, and have some very minor bruising.
