There are several ways to remove unwanted hair on the body: shaving, waxing, tweezing, and of course, depilatory creams. The problem with all of those hair removal methods is the temporary nature of the results. Not to mention, the itchy, ingrown hairs from shaving, and the three-week wait before you can have the unwanted hairs waxed again. Thankfully, there’s laser hair removal!
The basics
Laser hair removal utilizes intense pulsed light (IPL) from the Prowave laser to eliminate unwanted hair by targeting the pigment (melanin) in the hair and in the follicle growth center (the hair bulb). The light is converted to heat as it hits the target area resulting in the destruction of the follicle. Since hair on various parts of the body may be various stages (there are primarily four stages of hair growth) at any given time, multiple sessions will be necessary to completely get rid of the unwanted hair. Hair follicles that are in the anagen (active growth) phase have the greatest amount of melanin, which makes it the ideal time to remove unwanted hair.
Does it really work?
Laser hair removal is very effective for the permanent reduction of unwanted hair. Individuals with a combination of lighter skin and darker hair get the most benefit as the laser light isn’t absorbed by the pigment in the skin.
It can take anywhere from three to 10 treatments, spaced at intervals of four to eight weeks, to fully get rid of the hair, depending on the area being treated. Laser hair removal does not work on gray and blond hair.
