You just had your first microneedling treatment and want to ensure optimal results. Proper aftercare over the next week or two is essential for your skin to heal properly, avoid complications like infection, and get the most out of your microneedling session. Here’s your complete guide to microneedling aftercare.
Keep Your Skin Clean and Moisturized
It’s vital to gently cleanse your skin each morning and evening after microneedling. Use a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water, then pat dry. Don’t scrub or rub the treated area. Immediately apply a thick moisturizer to lock in moisture. This helps soothe skin and prevent scabbing or flaking. Reapply moisturizer whenever your skin feels dry. Avoid getting water on the treated areas for two days if possible.
Minimize Irritation
Be extremely gentle with your skin for at least a week post-treatment. Don’t use exfoliants or retinol that can cause irritation. Avoid direct sunlight exposure, and wear at least SPF 30 if going outside. Protect treated skin from windburn with a scarf. Stay away from chlorinated pools, saunas, steam rooms, and hot tubs until the skin heals. Also, refrain from putting makeup on treated areas until the skin heals. Prevent picking or scratching, even if it itches.
Support Healing Through Healthy Lifestyle Choices
Optimize your recovery by maintaining general skin health. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Eat anti-inflammatory foods like fatty fish, berries, leafy greens and mushrooms. Avoid inflammatory foods like processed meat, fried foods, alcohol, and refined carbs. Don’t smoke or vape. Get 7 to 9 hours of quality sleep per night. Manage stress levels through yoga, meditation, or journaling. Supplements like vitamin C, zinc, and collagen may also help.
Be Patient With the Process
It takes time for your harmed skin to rejuvenate itself post-procedure. Most patients see results after three sessions spaced 30 days apart. Optimal collagen production continues for months. Redness may last up to a week, sometimes longer. Tiny scabs falling off around days 5 to 7 are normal. Post-treatment breakouts can occur as debris releases. Track your skin’s progress with photos. Call your provider if you have severe pain, oozing/bleeding, or signs of infection. Trust the process, and your fresh glow will come!
