Pigmentation is defined as the natural coloring of animal or plant tissue. For your skin, the problem comes when that pigmentation changes. There are a variety of reasons this can happen: sun damage, hormones, and vascular issues.
You may think of these spots as something else…freckles, age spots, liver spots. Uh, can I get some spot remover?
Thankfully, that’s what we think of our Intense Pulsed Light therapy (IPL) at Saltz Spa Vitoria, spot remover. We use IPL to remove freckles and other pigmentation issues.
What pigmentation problems do we treat?
Here are the pigmentation problems we normally address for our patients:
- Age spots
- Broken blood vessels
- Brown spots
- Melasma
- Port wine stains
- Rosacea
- Sun damage
What’s the lowdown on IPL
IPL functions in a similar way to lasers, utilizing light energy. In both cases, the light energy is absorbed by the targeted skin cells with darker color. The light energy is converted to heat energy that damages those darker cells. Their darker color is the downfall of those cells, as the darker pigment attracts the light energy that then damages the cells.
Immediately after treatment, the area is red and swollen, almost like a burn. Over the next few days the redness fades, but the brown in the damaged spots become darker and darker. Then the spots peel off. This process can take from 10 to 21 days.
Changing wavelengths
Our IPL handpiece allows us to set it to different filters that adjust the portion of the light spectrum delivered to the skin. By changing the setting, beyond age spots we can also treat rosacea, flushing, and broken capillaries.
Beyond the face, we use IPL on the neck, chest, arms, and hands. Treatments are spaced every three weeks for the face, and every six weeks for areas on the body. It usually takes from two to six treatments to get the results you seek.
